Hello, new member and novice to boating. I have a 15ft Larson runabout with a 65hp Merc. Probly 1969-72. The problem I have is with the shift cable. It wont go into foward gear, just neutral and reverse. I relaced the impeller last fall and the problem accured right after that. I had it in neutral when I removed the lower unit. My question is do you think it's in the control box, the cable, or where it's connected at the motor? I'll spend the money but if I can figure it out I'll take a shot at it. Thanks for all replys.

One way to narrow it down, is to disconnect the cable from the shift arm at the motor and see if you can shift it into gear by hand. Since this happened right after you did the pump makes me think something is amiss in the lower unit. Make sure you are rotating the propeller some while trying to get it in gear. Failing this, you may want to drop the lower unit and have a look at the shift rod and see if it's seated properly.

Check this link out, too:

web page
