My outboard was not wanting to shift at all. It was in reverse and I gave it a little throttle, and I heard a ratcheting noise. When I tried to shift into forward to pull back to the dock, it did not want to shift. Dropped the lower unit, and I couldn't turn the prop shaft at all. Lower unit was stuck in reverse. Had to have a shop pull the bearing carrier due to it being froze in there good and solid. Picked up the disassembled lower unit today. I can't see anything that looks obviously wrong. All the gears are in good shape, all the needle and roller bearings are fine. I pulled the clutch out, and inspected and reassembled it. I have to put a lot of force on the follower to move the clutch, but it does feel like a stiff spring, and the clutch does slide freely, just a lot of resistance from the spring. The only parts that look like they have any wear are the follower (where it contacts the cam), and the shift cam. Please take a look at the attached photos and let me know if the wear looks normal.
Also, does anyone have any other ideas as to why it wasn't shifting? When I first dropped the lower unit, I pulled the shift shaft bushing, and the shift shaft snapped to where the top end was wedged rearward in the opening.
Sorry about the long post.
