i recently purchased a boat a 1978 glastron, with a 70 hsp evunrude motor model # 70773s the problem i have is the control box, the reverse is in the neutral position and then pushing forward is neutral and then forward...i tried changing the position of the handle itself, figuring that would be the easiest to do, since you only have to remove the allen screw and reposition the handle.but ,when i did this i couldn't line it up with the groove under the handle, now, is it posssible to remove the outer cover and turn ,and line it up that way,or am i just thinking on the wrong page, any help would be appreciated..thank you

Re: shift control box

Hi Jerry and welcome to iboats!

First....the problem is most likely NOT in the controls.

Go back to the engine and pull the control cables off the attachments. Then put the engine in neutral at the engine. The shift lever at the engine should be near verticle.

Now go to the controls and shift into forward and watch the ends of the control cables. The first one that moves is the shift cable.

Take the shift cable and attach it to the shift lever on the engine. While holding the shift lever in place, adjust the thumb trunion till the trunion fits into the cable anchor block. Do the same for the throttle cable making sure the throttle arm on the engine is all the way forward.

Now try shifting with the control while a helper spins the prop. If the problem is still there, post us here on the forums.

Has the lower unit been off lately for any work?

EDIT: Couple things....once you have checked for the shift cable, put the controls back into neutral for cable adjustment at the engine. And, the engine is a 77'.
