I got a 87 3.0 mercruiser and was wondering how to tell if the shift dogs are bad or if it's just out of adjustment. It seems to shift better when it warms up. AT first it just grinds when I attempt to put it in gear.

Re: shift dogs

popping OUT of gear would be a sign, as far as the grinding it`s normal on a mercruiser when going into gear.

Re: shift dogs

Are you pushing the shift lever firmly ahead at a swift pace, or are you trying to "ease" it into gear and moving the lever slowly?

Re: shift dogs

I've got it idled down about 500 rpms. No I'm not trying to ease it into gear but it starts to rev up before it gets in gear. I've tried using the specs on setting the shift linkage at 6 inches like the manual states but it's still not right.
