Shift Interuptor Issues? Something else?

I have a Custom built 406 stroker mated with an Alpha 1 gen 1.

I went on my first outing of the year this past weekend. Anytime i shift into reverse slowly it dies. to keep it running i have to slam it in reverse to keep the RPM's up. When i go from reverse to neutral it dies. Going from forward to neutral and neutral to forward i have no problems. Since it only happens when shifting i assume interuptor switch, but since it doesnt do it going into forward and since if i cram it in reverse it will not die, i am unsure.

any other suggestions before i replace shift interuptor?

Thanks
Tyler

Re: Shift Interuptor Issues? Something else?

Don't shift into reverse (or forward) slowly, shift into gear briskly. I wouldn't call it "slamming" into gear unless the idle RPM's are too high and the engine slams into gear. What is the idle RPM with the boat in the water, engine warmed up and idling in gear?

If the engine is dying coming out of gear, that means the shift interrupt switch is working. Did you adjust the shift cables after replacing the engine? It sounds like the lower shift cable could be bad, remove it from the anchor points and see if it goes in/out buttery smooth, any resistance will cause the shift interrupt switch to activate and kill the engine. I'd also check to see if the shift interrupt switch if adjusted properly.

Do you have the OEM manual?

You can put all the interupters you want in it! They will all do the same thing.

When was the shift cable replaced?

Ayuh,.... Agreed,.... Change the lower shift cable...

Btw,.... There's Nothing "Stroker" 'bout a 406,... It's a 400, with a .030" overbore, same crank stroke...

400 cu in in front of an Alpha? Ouch! Can't see that lasting long!

Ayuh,.... A 400 is big displacement, 'n low Hp, in it's natural state...
Somethin' like 185hp from Chevy, in a truck..

I've got 1 on a stand, waitin' for me to find the time to slap the heads on it, reassemble it, 'n stab it into this Nova 230 settin' in my driveway...

Big displacement, low horsepower = massive torque = bye-bye Alpha.... :D :D

Re: Shift Interuptor Issues? Something else?

I guess it was bad wording on my part. Im not shifting slowly, i know you have to go briskly to keep dogs from grinding. but to keep it running i have to go from neutral to high RPMs in reverse. Its like the interuptor is over activating, which would make sense with the suggestions of shift cable. So ill start there.

At idle its at about 500-600 RPMs, so not too high, I just have to get the RPMs up once i go into reverse or the interuptor kills it out.

As for the 406 paired with Alpha. Believe me, I know it will fry the alpha, I just bought this boat at end of last summer and it was already like that. The motor was dyno'd at 380HP and since the outdrive is only rated for 300HP, I was able to get a great deal on the boat as I told the previous owner Im going to have to switch to a Bravo, so it worked as a nice bargaining tool on purchase price. I intend to do the Bravo swap at some point this summer.

If the interrupt switch is activating too easily check the spring on the back of the 'Actuating lever assembly'... If it's broken that could be causing the problem.
