When I shift the throttle into neutral the engine dies and blows the 10 amp ignition fuse.

I can turn the ignition off while the boat is in gear and then shift into neutral OK and restart the engine, but if I shift into neutral with the engine running it dies right when it "clicks" into neutral.

Is this the neutral interrupt switch and if so, why does the fuse blow?

It would appear some wires are frayed inside the control box and are being shorted as the lever is moved. With the key in the off position, 12V is interrupted which would account for why it doesn't happen then. With 12V present, the short occurs. Disassemble the box and have a look.

By control box do you mean the throttle/shift lever assembly?

i think upinsmoke has it pegged.especially if its an older engine, the wire covering becomes brittle, falls off at the slightest touch and shorts
