shift issues

1987 searay alpha one, replace the lower shift cable, when I move the shifter forward the outdrive engaged not problem, then I moved the shifter reverse but have to move the shifter a lot on the reverse for engagement, I don't know how was before because I just get the boat, please advice.

Did you adjust using the instructions in the factory manual? There is an adjustment for throw at the shift plate also.

Does it go into reverse ? If it does it may be your shift spool is worn and to engage reverse it requires more movement to put it in gear.If you are getting forward and reverse and it is not grinding like crazy then I would not worry about it.You will get a small grind as that is the nature of the beast.There are a lot of how to on You Tube as well,just punch in Mercruiser shift cable etc.
