Power plant is 7.4MPI with B3 [2001]. When first starting up if shift is moved from neutral to forward, clutch engagement is A-OK. If I have to back out of a space first and then move through neutral (I wait a second or so in neutral) and move to forward, I have to push the lever further (motor revs more) before clutch engagement (Is the problem in the shift cable or someware in the B3?

Note: anyone with B3 and SS props in salt water add a second Mercathode controller in parallel with the original if you want to fully protect the drive. (What a difference when the field voltage is above .9V).

Re: Shift Play

Get the Bravo service manual and check the adjustment of the linkage first.
It may be a bad cable causing the problem, but on a 2001 I wouldn't expect it due to wear, but if there was an overheat at sometime and the cable was laying on the exhaust pipe it could melt the cover and allow rust to start. Then you have a problem.
Check the oil in the drive, and the magnetic drain plug for signs of troubles. Burned oil, metal magnet, water in oil.
Has the drive been off lately to check for water in the bellows? With the cone clutch in Bravos, water can cause slippage.
