Have a 83 Evinrude 60 recently purchased that runs great but it will not shift properly. If I adjust the shift cable to get it to go into Fwd, the reverse will not engage properly. If I adjust it to go into reverse the fwd will not engage (sits there and claters).

Re: Shift problem

It sounds like there may be some slop somewhere. Have someone move the shifter while you watch the shift linkage, then figure out where there's lost motion. Could be anywhere from the control box, cable, or shifter linkage.

Re: Shift problem

Remove the shift cable from the mtr and see how much slop is in it. If there's a lot you got control box or cable probs. If not check all your linkage on the mtr.

Re: Shift problem

Check all that, changed cables, problem persists.

Did this engine EVER shift properly for you? I'm wondering if the control box you got with the engine doesn't have enough throw, that could account for the problem you're seeing (if you're absolutely positive there's no slop in the cable or any part of the shift linkage).
