I have a 1983 9.9 johnson seahorse that "jumps"out of forward gear. Any Ideas what is causing this??

Re: shift problem

Bob...need a little more info. When it jumps out of gear, does it go right back in and feels like your hitting a log in the water? Or, does it stay outta' gear until you put it back in? Does the shift handle on the side of the motor return to neutral?

Asking these questions cause you didn't post if it was a tiller control or remote.

Thanks.

sorry about that. It is tiller control and yes it feels like you are hitting something. Sometimes it goes to neutral other times stay in forward.

Re: shift problem

Assuming this only happens when your doing some "high speed" stuff, a possibilit is that the clutch dog and/or forward gear may be worn out. The lobes on the gear and dog get rounded over and don't hold at high speed ops. They kick out and back in.

Now...not knowing how long you've owned the motor and if this is a new problem, another possiblity is the shift rod in the lower unit is outta adjustment.

Gotta' manual? Otta get one or see your local wrench for a check up.

Haven't had it very long. Thanks for the help. I will have to see if I can find a manual.
