I recently purchased a '97 merc 150 v5 EFI counter rotating outboard. I'm going through the install myself and just a new control box for it, merc 4000 series control box, part number 881170A15 (see it at http://www.boatsunlimitedny.com/controls_and_throttle_shift_cables.htm).
My problem is that upon installing this control, the forward movement of the handle will in turn move the shift control forward and also the shift unit in the outboard in the same direction (forward). This in turn, makes the engine shift into reverse gear.... moving the handle backwards shifts the engine into forward gear.

Of course the wife things that this is just fine, but I sure don’t.

I've read that there is ways to reverse this, but I've taken apart the entire control box (not too hard to do) and cannot see any way to do this. I've also looked for this info on-line to no avilability. The manual that came with the control box is worthless...
I'm temped to play with the shift control part of my engine, but don't want to mess things up...
Any suggestions would sure be welcomed. Since I purchased the engine prior to having it installed, I have not previous control box to work from.

Thanks in advance.
Ed
ebardo@hotmail.com
