Pulled lower unit and replaced impeller with gear shift lever in forward. Must have got the shift rod out of adjustment because only had forward gear regardless of shift lever position (no neutral or reverse) upon reinstallation. Pulled lower unit back off and thru trial and error (turning shift rod a little each time) got it back together and now have forward, neutral and reverse. If I don't go into reverse quickly, I get a small amount of grinding before engaging (which isn't all that unusual from other outboards I've owned. But because of my trial and error approach, I don't have full confidence that I have it on correctly. Is there a proper procedure to ensure I have it adjusted correctly. I have the factory shop manual, but it makes no mention of shift rod/versus shift lever position. (Not one of the better factory manuals I've owned).
