Shift rod adjustment.

OK so my manual is in the mail.

Replacing water pump on 1977 70 HP Evinrude. I think I messed with the shift rod a little and now it may be out of alignment.

Any general thoughts on proper measurements for shift rod prior to reinstalling?

1976 - 1977 - 70, 75hp (L) 21-25/64" plus/minus 1/32". Have shift rod in neutral.

Measurement taken from the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the shift rod hole.

One thing just came to my mind in regards to this.

I have a Johnson lower unit installed on this 1977 70 HP Evinrude. The measurements above are for an Evinrude motor.

Are the specifications for shift rod length going to be different for a unknown year Johnson lower unit?
