Shift Rod Grommet

1988 Evinrude 150 XP

I have the lower unit removed for water pump impeller replacement. On the shift rod is a rubber grommet. Does the metal side of the grommet go up or down?

on the grommet, the side that has the lip faces upwards

I was mistaken. there is no metal on either side. It was just dirty. Both sides have a lip. One side is the lip is rounded and the other side the lip has a square shoulder. I believe the rounded side goes up. Any comments are appreciated.

My manual doesn't make mention of there being 2 sides. Just says stick it on over the shift rod?
