Don't know on the 85. My 86 manual says 22 1/16" plus or minus 1/32". Could be the same.

My 1984 manual has the same (22-1/16"), add exactly 5" for the extra long shaft models.

That's measured from the gearcase mating surface to the center of the hole at the top of the shift rod with the gearcase "in neutral and offset facing forward".

I still don't quite see how the rod length (unless it is miles out) makes any difference, the cable adjustment takes care of the position of the lever, doesn't really matter if it is slightly off, you still have the same amount of travel from the cable via the gear lever, if someone can offer an explanation I will be gratful!

The only thing I can see is that the throw is longer in one direction than it is the other.

Re: shift rod height

The space between the intake manifold and the floor of the lower cowl is very limited; get the rod length wrong and the lever will bottom out or not rise enough and you will not fully engage the gears.

After you remove and replace the gearcase a few times trying to make it work right without measuring, you will see the wisdom of setting it correctly the first time.
