I have an older 6hp MERC about 1976. The shift rod food is off inside the lower unit, I have everything out
Except the big gear in the back its in front of the shift foot, I can't figure out if it is pressed in or what.
Can anyone tell me how to get it out so I can get to the shift rod foot???

On the larger engines you pull out what you have pulled out: Reverse carrier bearing assembly and prop shaft with the shifting "clutch dog" attached and cam follower somewhat pointed pin at the front of the prop shaft. After that you are looking at the rear of F gear, bearings and shims. There is a flange on the F gear so it has to come out somewhat before it will tilt. Try a coat hanger clipped off at the tapered parts, near the hook and grind them to a flat blade....vertical referenced to the coat hanger being flat and horizontal, Bend an "L" on each of these ends pointing inward. Reach around , over, under or however you can manuever the hooks around the drive shaft pinion which is sticking right there in your face....and way.

Once you get hold of the outer edges of the gear and pull it out.....half inch for a guess, if the engine is vertical it should fall down into the bottom of the gear housing and you can use the same wire hooks to drag it out with the thrust bearing and any shims. Pay attention to how things come out as the shims set the spacing between the F gear and the Pinion so you want to put them back where you got them.

With that out, you are looking at the cam. Grasp it with a pair of long-long nosed pliers or suitable tool and pull it out. You will notice a splined hole in it that the shift rod spline slips into. Get an idea as to how it moves back and forth in the slots made to accept it and reinsert it in the center of the movable range while ensuring that your shift lever is in N. A little wiggling of both rod and cam and some luck and it will slip back in the cam plate.

Put the gearbox back together the way you tore it apart.

HTH,
Mark
