OK, I am no great mechanic but I can read fairly well.
I am going to put a water pump kit and carburetor kits in this motor because I have no idea how long it sat dry or if they were ever replaced, and the motor ran rerally rough last year. My SELOC Manual on pg 7-13 for removal of the lower unit step 3, says "remove the shift rod screw (protruding under the top engine cover above the exhaust housing)". I CANNOT FIND THAT SCREW. There is a 9/16 bolt (I think not a screw) that connects the shift mechanism horizontally to the body of the engine. I hesitate to take it off (wont clear the housing anyway) without knowing if that is the right one. I would really appreciate some help.

I have never worked on your exact model, but the screw should be in the linkage under the carb. My suggestion would be to move the shifter, and observe where the linkage connects to run down into the midsection. Should be screw #14 Hope you find it...:rolleyes:48 linkage.jpg

Remove the starter to access the shift rod retaining screw

Thanks a million, looks like #14. I shall brave the snow now to my shop and look in a minute.I would much rather not pull the starter if I don't have to. Thank you both again.

Remember this is a two step processs, taking it off, and putting it back on. A couple of bolts hold the start where it can be tilted to access the shift screw/bolt. What you are looking for is the top end of the shift linkage from the lower unit. If you are afraid to pull the starter, you best hire the water pump rebuild done as that's the easy part. You may get it loose without pulling the starter but your work will be hooking it back up without pulling the starter. Disconnect the battery first and you don't have to disconnect anything on the starter, just the bolts that hold it on as the cable will have enough freedom to let you access the shift screw.

OK, that helps a lot. After looking at it, I am more confident that I can take care of it. However, since I have to pull the carbs to rebuild both I think the shift rod screw will be much easier to get to with them out of the way. Thanks again for the help.

Everything went great. Moved the starter out of the way and with the carbs off for rebuild anyway, the water pump rebuild went smooth and everything is back together. After the carbs are done and the ice melts I am ready to fish. Thanks to all for the help here.
