Shift Shaft Excessive Play

I got an 1993 Alpha One Gen II drive, I got the unit off the bell housing, and I noticed that the shift shaft movies up and down approx 1/8th inch of play. Is this normal?? The plastic washer is in place I don't remember there being this much movement last time I had my drive off, any suggestions? As always Thank you for your help.

From what I recall, I thought this was normal. Once its engaged it should not move up.
