1966 Evinrude Ski-twin 33hp model no. 33653

I'm having trouble identifying what I need to do in order to replace the o-ring in my shift shaft bushing. The o-ring I received in my lower unit rebuild kit does not fit inside the shift shaft bushing, as it is too big. According to the marineengine.com parts diagram, there is only 1 o-ring and gasket, however I pulled out 2 o-rings. Can anyone give me any info as far as the correct placement and order of these parts?

Re: Shift shaft o-ring problem

hi gwoloshyn. I used to have a '66 33 hp too. Don't worry, you're not the first one to have trouble with that o-ring. the new one does look a little on the "plump" side, but I would use it if it fits. it should be nice and tight. putting a bit of vaseline on the tip of the shift rod can help it to pass through the tight, new o-ring. here's a link that can walk you through a whole lower unit reseal job. it's for an 18 hp, but it's the same basic process. holler if you get stuck.

Re: Shift shaft o-ring problem

The 33hp and 40hp use a 301877 o-ring, and a 304764 gasket. 18hp and smaller use the same o-r ing, but no gasket.

The o-ring is somewhat larger than the recess, and has to be squeezed in. That's so the shift rod has some wiggle room without leaking.

Thanks for the help. Should be all set to go re-assemble now.
