shift shaft wont go back in my force 120 1998

I put a new water pump in my 1998 Force 120, no problem. The O Ring was leaking on the shift shaft. When I pulled up the rubber grommet the shift shaft came up with it. Now it won't go back in to engage forward and reverse gears. What did I do wrong? How can I fix it?

Uh-oh. I just went through this. Spent a few frustrating days on it until I got professional help. What he had to do was fish the shift cam back into place because it moved when the shaft came out. Have you drained the fluid yet? If so, you can look down the tube and see it. Do you get any resistance when turning, or does it just spin freely now?

thanks for the advice, i fixed it before i could read your post. i was moving the lower end around and that shift cam showed itself. i used a bike spoke to center it. i have forward and reverse now. thanks again!!!!!!
