Can anyone advise me of a good way to determine the way to position the powerhead shift lever (slide block) to neutral or forward position to align with LU for installation? The shift cables ar not on the engine at the present time so I cannot use them for slide block positioning. The engine is a 78 175 HP V-6.

Re: shift slide block

I recommend installing the gearcase in neutral. Set the shift slider in the exact center of the slide track. After you align the driveshaft, have someone wiggle the shift lever back and forth until it lines up.

Thanks I will try your procedure. One thing that I noticed Saturday while cleaning and lubricating the slot that the slide block sides in is that there is an indention in the slide slot at the front end of the slot. Is there a reason for this, I don't think that the slide block will reach this point if I center it up as you described.
