Shift/Throttle Cable in Control Box

This is my second posting, my first did not get a response. I had to take off the side cover of my control box (1976 Evinrude 70HP) in order to get at the screws to tighten the control box to the gunnel. In doing so, I had to move the cold start lever up to make clearance to take the cover off, and also remove the shift/throttle cable from the cover. Now I don't remember how the shft/throttle cable fits back on the cover! Does the black keeper (barrel shape) on the shift/throttle cable fit into the barrel shape indent on the inside of the cover? Seems logical that it does. Are there any tips on reinstalling the shift/controller to ensure forward and reverse work and the cold lever start is functional?

Thanks.

yes, the barrel fits, in the barrel holder. just make sure every thing fits together, if it won't close it's not right. then test before you mount.

You will know if you have it right when you push the control handle forward, one cable, shift, will move either out or back depending on if shifting into reverse or forward. Pushing the throttle handle further will cause the other cable, throttle, to extend. If this works in either forward or reverse, then you have it right.

Re: Shift/Throttle Cable in Control Box

Thanks for replying. However, the shift/throttle cable appears to be one, that is, there is only one cable coming out of the lower portion of the control box (Evinrude power giide shifter) which has the face cover. For some reason, the barrel does not seem to fit into the "barrel indent" on the inside of the face cover, and if it did, it would hold the barrel in one place and you could not move the shifter forward or reverse.

Thanks again for the replies.

Re: Shift/Throttle Cable in Control Box

The model # is 70673D on my 1976 Evinrude 70 HP with an Evinrude Powerglide Pilot shifter control box. If you are following this thread, I cannot remember how the shift/throttle cable fits into the lower half of the inside cover plate on the control box.

Thanks again.

I finally figured out the problem. The reason I couldn't fit the barrel on the shift/throttle cable into the barrel opening on the inside cover plate was because there was a nylon busing inside the barrel opening which was making it very hard to slip the barrel into. So in my wisdom I removed the nylon bushing, slipped the nylon bushing over the barrel and then re-inserted the barrel now with the nylon bushing back into the barrel opening on the inside cover plate! Whew! The cover now with the shift/throttle cable was then reattached to the control box!

Thanks everyone for trying to help me solve this problem!
