Shift/Throttle lever Jammed

I have a 93 Mariah Diablo with the GM 3.0l and an Alpha 1 outdrive. The shift lever says "quicksilver" (brand?) on it. I was trying to trouble shoot a stalling engine when shifting into gear (shift cable? or ???) When moving the shift lever from full forward to neutral it was sticking, I forced it (bad idea) and now it wont go into forward at all. When I move the lever into reverse, only the throttle cable is moving. How do I get this controller off the side of the boat? I only see two bolts on the back side, and possibly a set screw on the bottom of the handle. This has to come apart somehow, as both sides are too big to go through any hole in the mounting.
Sorry if my terminology is incorrect, I'm a newbe here, and to boating in general. I am good mecanically, I know I can fix this, I just don't want to break anything else!

Bump...
Should I even mess with this, or just fork out the $$$ to the boat shop?

The whole side panel must be removed, then the shifter..
