Ihave a 1983 35HP Johnson. The shifter on the side of the motor is frozen(stuck) in neutral.Where should I start to troubleshoot this problem????Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
First, we need to isolate where the problem is, is it in the cable? or the engine?

This is easy to determine, remove the remote control cable from the shifter(on the side of the engine) and see if you can operate the shifter from there.

If you can, then the problem will be in the cable or remote control assemly.

If you can't, then we need to do a bit more looking and poking around.
check the cable are they free lube the shifting box oil works good or grease next see if there grease fitting in motor near the shifing lever grease it if there, there might be stop hung up to on the likage in side the hood I had a 1982 35 johson apart unless the linkage is bad in the lower shaft one of mine came apart i was stuck in reverse not good deal when happens
Make sure the throttle is set low enough. There is a lock-out so that you can't rev it up too high in neutral... If the throttle is too far advanced it locks the motor in neutral.

- Scott
The Model No.# is J35RCTS.The motor is not hooked up to cables, its is on a outboard motor stand waiting to be fixed once I know where to start??Thanx Jim (STURGEON GENERAL).
The lockout is under the cowling, not in the control box. You'll have to manually move the throttle connector to the slow position in order to release the lockout...

- Scott
