shifter loose

My shifter on my mark twain is very loose and it is a pain in the butt to shift into gear and back to neutral. Im thinking about getting a new shifter, but not sure if there is any way to make this one tighter against the vinyl? And If I end up replacing it how hard of a job is it? Any help would be appreciated.

my guess is,...the plywood behind the vinyl and padding is rotten...thats where your problem lies...sounds like you need to restore the gunwale upholstery and backing board.
