i recently purchased a boat with a 85 hp 1986 force outboard. It seemed to shift fine at first. This is a used boat so I thought i would change the lower unit oil even though i am a rookie to all of this. To make a long story short i loosened what i know now is the shift pin screw. I did not remove it all the way but loosened just enough to get oil out of it. Also i put on a new prop after all of this. When i took it to the lake it would die shifting into gear so i took it home and put it on the muffs. while it was on the muffs it would shift into gear it would make some noises but would go into gear without dying. Once it was in gear it seemed to run fine. Any suggestions would help.

Thank you

Re: shifting noise on force

Raise your idle speed a tad. Bottom of the vertical bar to the left of the carbs. The bolt touches the engine block. Then return to resetting the shift pin screw. The two problems are not related.

sorry but i am unsure what return to re-setting the shift pin screw means.

Re: shifting noise on force

The grinding noise is most likely the normal
clutch dog noise of shifting. The idle should only be fast enough to keep the motor running in gear.
If it has to be set too high in neutral it will cause premature wear of the clutch dog and gears.
Shifting should be done with firm crisp movement
Just quick enough to avoid excessive grinding.
Most likely your idle problem is a dirty gummed up carb. And if the motor has sat around a lot you will probably need to check the fuel system from tank to carb with special attention to cleaning.

Re: shifting noise on force

Steeliebug,

I have a 92/120Hp Force and took the shift pivot pin all the way out, kids yelling messing around and got me side tracked, pulled it all the way out thinking I was draining L/U, anyway as soon as I realized I did this, (had to be a second after I did it) I posted the question here and got an answer. Simply moved the trottle just alittle in foward, very slow and tried to reinstall went right in, but everyone tells me I got supper lucky to get it in so quickly, I very nervous about running it because alot of members told me to take down the L/U and check to make sure I got it back in properly, if you never pulled it out your gonna be fine,
