I have twin 2001 yamaha 150 hpdi's. It's hard shifting into forward and reverse. Shift cables are fine, lower unit oil is burned and gummed up.
No evidence of metal in oil. What should be done to try and salvage lower unit and make them shift easier??

Replace the gear lube. Poor shifting is normally caused by either incorrect idle or cable adjustments.

LU oil burned and gummed up? What caused that? Does it get changed every fall?

I own a 2003 150 HPDI...

Was probably caused due to neglect. Appeared to have never been changed (lu oil). The engines only have 225 hours on them. Lower unit has been drained and cleaned w/ mineral spirits but still hard to shift.

Be carefull that your shift testing is done with the engine running. You can bend the pin if the engine isn't turning over.
