your idle is either too high, or you cable are binding, or going bad. docking should be done very slow, reverse is not a brake. and no you should not go the reverse when going fast, you will take out the lower unit. do you shift into reverse in the car going fast?

ok, take away his last comment. but he's correct- idle too high or cables binding. check idle first, then go through your controls manual and adjust accordingly.
