Shifting Problems Wrong Shift Slide?

I installed my new SEI SE106 drive and I am now having problems shifting. The lower shift cable moves freely by hand and drive off the drive shifts easy. After looking at the Shift Slide it looks like it is grinding on the outdrive housing. I first question are all shift slides the same? Mine has 94894 C1 on it and it is 4.25" long.

I did notice when I pulled the drive off the slide shift was cocked to port instead of straight up and down it was at the 10 o'clock position. I have it now at 12 o'clock position just have not put the drive back on yet.

does the shift slide rotate freely?? it should, otherwise the set screw may be too tight on the end - or corrosion, maybe time to install a new cable

there should also be plenty of grease in betwen the roller guides and in the shift slide cavity on the drive

the tap shown on the website is wrong, you need a NPS tap (straight, not tapered)

yep, it is. almost hosed me when i was in a learning mode. only way i got away with it was cause i taped not deep enough, and then taped to where i had only 2 or whatever the spec is screw threds showing. + perfect seal. man, really turned me off for glm stuff. + that site. everything on the web aint a fact.

the slide should be hardly no slack, + be able to free wheel 360*. ya don't need the tool, but ya do gotta observe the shift slide entering the upper drive. it has to go in straight. + be able to rotate.

so far, i've not needed the tool. i got a drive stand. + put it on a little at a time + check the slide to be sure it's going into the upper freely. i pre lub the slide + the cavity in the upper. 2-4-C...

i got a 1 drive.

The slide does not rotate freely. I did put a lot more grease in the cavity and it seems to shift better but I think I should take the drive back off a loosen the set screw so the slide rotates freely.

Thanks,
PF

From the "book" :)

7. Install set screw into shift slide. Tighten until contact
with core wire. Then back off 1/8 turn max.
Safety wire set screw to shift slide using a ?figure
8? pattern. Twist until tight and cut off excess
length of safety wire.

It's spinning freely now and well greased. The drive is back on and I will test in the morning. Thanks everyone.

Re: Shifting Problems Wrong Shift Slide?

i hope you installed the stainless steel safety wire on the end of the slide too??

if the screw comes out, you will get into reverse but will stay there, no return to neutral and no forward

I have no idea about this and it was not in my drive. I guess I need to read the instructs on installation of shift cable again.

Re: Shifting Problems Wrong Shift Slide?

I found the instrustions that show the little wire I am just not sure where or how to wrap it around. The wire is not on my slide shift looks to me the PO just tightened the set screw so tight that they did not use little wire.
From Sterndrives.com"
"Now get the small parts bag that came with the cable and locate the new aluminum slide, the allen set screw, and the small piece of wire.
Take the cable core and slide it into the aluminum slide.
The lead end of the core will be recessed in the slide.
Thread the allen set screw into the slide until it JUST BARELY TOUCHES the lead.
Adjust the allen screw so the slide has no end play BUT will still spin freely on the core.
IF you over tighten the allen screw then the drive wont shift right.
Twist the little wire piece to lock the allen in place. '

When all else fails, try reading the OEM service manual instead of spending all the time searching the internet. You would be amazed what you could find out about installing the shift cable properly.

CLICK HERE to download the manual.

This picture came from the above manual.

Funny thing that pic doesn't depict a figure 8 pattern with the wire.

Thanks Don that is exacly what I needed, just glad that manual isn't gone like the others. I will find a piece of SS wire tomorrow and pull the drive again and get it right the only way it should be.
