Happened on an Alpha 1 Gen 2, drive serial: 0D678189

After two years of sitting in storage I put the boat in last week in our creek; we have a launch next to our dock. I had did some basic service prior to putting in the water, replace fluids, grease joints, etc. Engine runs great. Sterndrive was fully serviced the year prior to storage but still 3 years ago.

I shifted into reverse from neutral while on trailer with slight difficulty. When I went to put it in forward, it would not shift past neutral. I was about to run into opposite bank so I forced it and was able to move forward. Went back to neutral and docked it. I took a look and saw the shift interrupt switch (old limit switch version) was cracked and was not stalling the engine during shifting through neutral. I replaced it and everything seemed to be ok. I take it out to the lake. Hole shot is good for a 3.0 and boat gets on plane immediately. Top speed is around 33 or so which is 'normal' for this boat.

I take it out the next day with my son and we get into the lake. I go full throttle and it starts to get on plane and then high revs up with no more forward motion. I go to neutral, then reverse and it moves backwards. Go back to slow forward, then full throttle and it launches and gets on plane for about 30 seconds then high revs and no forward motion. Kill the engine, put it in forward, jump in, and I can spin the prop by hand.

I flag someone down for a tow back to dock. The stern was really covered in weeds (major problem on our lake). I untangle it, check the prop and notice I cannot rotate the prop by hand so now I'm doubting myself. I'm reluctant to take it out for testing as it is at least a half mile of paddling up stream if I die on the lake again. I took the prop off to inspect the hub. I'll be putting it back on later today and will post back any updates.

Any thoughts on what may be causing this? Stripped clutch or gear?

I turned the sleeve in the screw ... Make marks on the screw and the sleeve, after rolling, check their places.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,.... Sounds like,....
Slippin' prop hub,.... Scribe a line on the prop, nut, shaft,.. try it, if they don't align, replace the prop,.....
Bad motor coupler,.... Look for rubber dust 'round the back of the motor, where the outdrive's shaft enters the flywheel cover,....
Bad drive,.... Drain the oil, 'n look for "Stuff",.....
