I am setting up an old boat with a 58 Johnson 18hp with Shipmaster controls.

I know the new cables are readily available. I just want to be sure that I have the cables going to the correct lever.
With one shorter and one longer lever, which is the shifter and which the throttle? Shifter 1.jpg

It was taken apart some time ago. Just want to do it right.

Long lever with Red knob is normally throttle, short lever with Black knob is shift.

Remember that there are two types of control cables for Johnson Shipmaster and Evinrude Simplex control units. Yours requires Type 400 cables.

lmao I just picked up the same control box. I was wondering the same thing myself but wasn't going to ask until next spring when I was going to hook it up. And its good to know I'd be needing type 400 cables.

Is there a way to reverse them so the cables come out the other side of the unit so that it can be mounted on the other side of the boat? I haven't even taken mine apart yet too look. Just WD40'd to free em up and put some oil on to keep em' moving till it thaws out here.

Yes. Look at the box and you will see holes for the cables on what is now the "front" of the unit. All you have to do, is to loosen the set screws in the casing guide (inside the unit), pull the cable out and reinsert it from the opposite direction. Repeat with the second cable and it will then work on the opposite side of the boat.

Nice control box set up. I just recently picked up an Evinrude Simplex control box. Gale also made a shift box like this called the Bo'sun LOL Very basic and easy to use. I never could get those set screws loose though. It seems like they get torqued down pretty hard.
