thanks guys..
im looking at just under thirty feet.
im having a brokerage co look at duty and taxes.

gee if i threw a blanket over it (the way some poeople throw a blanket over there kids smuggeling them in to a drive inn) ya think i could get by canadian customs??? lol

ive been looking at larger boats down the eastern side. (great lakes is east to me
) and some screamin deals there. if i find the right one......

little more investigation yet!

A couple more thoughts. The Great Lakes also border Canada.
If you could give an idea what boats you are looking at, perhaps I could find some help.
I spend most of my on line time on BOC (Bayliner Owners Club). We have a lot of members in the Great Lakes area and many would be willing to take a non professional look at something you might be interested in.
It wouldn't have to be a Bay. Most are helpful there. I could ask or you could post there. We have non Bay members that haven't saw the light yet.
Or if this carries over til spring, I could swing by on my way to Northern Michigan.
Georgian Bay, a part of Lake Huron is all Canadian waters. Also North Channel which is upper Lake Huron is Canadian. The East shore of Lake Huron is Canadian as is much of Lake Erie. Also parts of Lake Ontario. The prices won't be as good but the Canadian taxes will have been paid.
Winsor Ontario is across the River from Detroit and is also auto country. I know a BOC member who just retired from Ford and may be able to provide some info.
The real buys, I think, will be in the auto areas.
Just one more thing. You may be able to find somethng up to 28' or so on a trailer.

to find a 28 or thirty on a trlr would be, optimal.
my girls family live in sudbury ont. i have been thinking of a road trip there for some time. the only thing that scares me is falling asleep on the road thru the praries!!! lol.

hmmmm i bet i could buy in det. and shoot the shoreline of one of the lakes to canada....
naw thats how you get shot by the customs people.

the boat has to be the right one...dont care really what kind...just big.. clean..cheap and kinda running... im ok to do a little work. i even have a few motors and drives kickin round.. (alpha...oh and a new b3...that i stupidly bought. but would work good on a 30 footer)

Been to Sudbury many times. I live in Mich. near Sault Ste Marie.
We boat in North Channel and Georgian Bay. Spend a lot of time in Killarney.
Sudbury is the nearest big city to Killarney.
Used to tow our 2755 Bay to Killarney.
If you have a pickup, towing across hwy 2 would be an easy trip.
Not in the winter of course. You would have to pick your days.

It is indeed on the Pacific...and the Yukon and Alberta and Washington State, Idaho and I think maybe even Montana..or at least pretty close.
The Canadian Provinces are big...sort of like 4 or 5 states rolled into one.
Lots of great freshwater boating inland in the Okanagan area and some of the worlds very best ocean boating out on the west coast in the galapagos of islands that are protected from the 'big' Pacific by 300+miles of Vancouver Island. Its amazing and beautiful.
Lots of U.S boats up from the U.S here in the summer...probably at least 1/2 of what is cruising to be honest.

i used to love in victorias inner haurbor and toovey bay (very end of esquimalt harbour. by six mile and fort rodd hill) on a 43 footer m-y.

your right.... the awesome beauty of this provence is incredible.

the guys from the states will see it on tv in the 2010 olympics. cant wait to share the beauty withem.

You are right about the beauty. We are rv'ers also and as such have visited most of them.
I spend almost 3 months a year in Canada.

I agree you should be able to find excellent deals in the Great Lakes area. Michigan is still in the 2001 - 2007+ recession. Comments about fresh water boats vs salt-water boats are excellent.

After he retired, a neighbor took his 25-year-old 15' runabout from Michigan to Florida. Within a couple years he had to replace the OB due to corrosion.

One more thought -- you said you might visit this way anyway, and pull a boat home. You'd have to investigate the paperwork / customs angles pretty thoroughly, but it would probably be much less expensive to ship across the US than Canada due to fuel prices. A dozen years ago, we did a lot of volunteer work with a competitive drum & bugle corps. The Canadian corps all traveled the US highways around Lake Erie rather than across Ontario because fuel was so much less. Of course the paperwork and customs aspects are a lot different now, too. Something to consider.

A buck fifty to two fifty? Unless there's a zero missing there, get the hell away from those estimates. If you're talking Florida to Seattle it should be in the thousands and probably a couple for that size. Typically, the longer the distance, the cheaper your per mile price so you may be able to find something around $1 per, which still makes it rather steep. A-1 Auto Transport does it and they'll give you a price for free. I used them between Texas and California last year and I had no issues with them. May be worth a phone call.
