Shoot thru hull transducer questions

Transducer readings havnt worked since I obtained this boat last year. Was last on my long list of fixes. Finally got to it this year. Main problem from the pic is the state of the gel coat in the ski locker (Regals are known for this, Im finding out). Im going to post separately to find out what I should be doing about that.
This post is about that mess of a transducer you can see. It was glued to the gel coat, which came off. Can this unit be salvaged (cleaned up and replaced once the locker is taken care of) or can I just cut the wire and install a new puck?
Lots of experience with fish finders, none with transducers.

Anyway, clean up the transducer as well as you can.

The bow of a boat usually has obstacles in the hull that preclude a transducer from working. Transducers will only shoot thru solid fiberglass and resin w/o any voids. Also, transducers either need to be bonded to the hull or be wet to function at all.

I would put the transducer in the stern, under the engine, slightly to the side and see if it functions better. Just lay it there and wet it with water, and test it. Move it around to obtain the best readings. After you find the best place, rig up some kind of brace to hold it. I screwed mine into the engine stringer, and it worked fine.

Unless you know how old (they wear out) and know of a fact that the transducer works, I would just replace it.
