i was reading the instructions for a shoot thru transducer and it was saying that if you have a sandwich hull, you have to cut thru till you can set the transducer on the outer layer of glass, well, how do i know if i have a sandwich hull?? it's a 1980 IMP AZTEC 20 ft, inboard, and where would i mount thwe silly thing??? the engine bay has a tub you'd have to cut through, theres a fuel tank acess hold about mid ways of the boat, but that's where the sanwich hull question comes in. any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Why not mount it at the base of the transom on the outside?

ketsair,

Welcome to iboats!

If it is a shoot thru "puck" type style then I don't believe you can mount it on the outside of the transom. You may want to repost this in the electronics forum as there may be more experience over there. Also, you need to note which brand and model sounder you're talking about.

I have mounted a Humminbird shoot thru, and it has worked very well. It came with another style for the base of the transom, I had to order the shoot thru separately.

Re: shoot thru transom????

many fishfinders come with a 'ducer suitable for either shoot-thru-hull or transom mount (but not shoot-thru-transom ;) ) .

One way to find out is to make a temporary "well" out of something like modelling clay in a likely spot - use sandbags or something to hold the transducer down in there, and fill it with water. Just enough water to cover the bottom of the transducer, so it's not trying to "see" through air. Take her out for a test drive to see if that spot works. Should get clear readings at all speeds.

i've read on forums that you can drop it in a baggie with water in it and set the baggie on the hull but i've never tried it.
