Excuse my ignorance but I'm looking for a backup outboard for our boat which we have just purchased and need some help. The boat is a 15' Half Cabin Crusader (Fibreglass hull), we have a 60HP Evinrude (1990) as the main outboard and I'm after a 6-12HP backup outboard just in case of breakdown. I've found a 2nd hand outboard which I'm interested in however I have no idea what is meant by Short or long shaft... The outboard concerned is a short shaft.

Does it matter if it's short or long shaft? Does this refer to the length of the lower unit? Can the mounting be adjusted to suit either short or long shaft? (I have not purchased the mount yet).

Any advice / recommendations would be welcome.

Re: Short Shaft / Long Shaft?

If your current motor is a long shaft (20"), then you will need a long shaft kicker too...

Thanks Rick, Even I can understand that, I'll measure it before I buy anything.
