THIS IS FIRST TIME WITH OUTBOURD SO IM SORRY FOR THE DUMB QUESTION. I BORROWED A BUDDYS CAN AND HOSE TO ELIMINATE MY TANK AS PROBLEM. HIS WAS PLASTIC AND HAD A SCREW/KNOB THAT HAD DIRECTIONS FOR USE.MINE IS AN OLDER TANK BUT ITS IN GREAT CONDITION.ALL I HAVE IS A LID THAT YOU TAKE OFF AND THEN REPLACE AFTER FILLING. THEN ONEDAY AT THE LAKE I SAW A GUY THAT HAD A CAN JUST LIKE MINE EXCEPT THE CAP. HIS CAP WAS SIMILAR TO MINE BUT IT HAD A VALVE ON IT. DO I NEED TO LOOSEN MY CAP WHILE IN USE. I WAS THINKING THIS WOULD MAKE ME LOOSE MY FUEL FLOW.

They made several different tanks/caps. My bet yours is vented. You gave no information on type. Im betting 1970's thru 1990 OMC tank??

But to answer your question..they all have to vent.

It needs to be vented, one time I forgot to open the vent, it looked like a empty juice box after someone sucked all the air out. YES the fuel pump is that powerful. Vent it.

Re: SHOULD GAS CAN BE VENTED

The tank has to be vented in order to fill the void where the gas once was. If not the engine will probably not run for very long. This will also cause an extreme vacuum pulling against the fuel pump and reaking havoc on the rubber seal in it.
