Not my boat, but same engine..

The engine is running great in the driveway, but was stalling when I put it in gear. It seems to be doing OK now, but I noticed this and wanted to make sure that it was normal.

Thanks

Yes, very warm or hot water should be spurting out with the exhaust from those holes at idle speed. If you're checking it in the driveway with muffs and a garden hose, make sure you have enough water pressure and the muffs are perfectly aligned over the water intake grate/holes. If that's OK and you haven't replaced the water pump impeller in a couple of years, might be something to consider changing.

Yea that's the overflow or excess pressure port.
Your pump can pump WAY more water than the motor needs at speed.
It has a reliefe valve (that if clear) allows water/steam out the back.

What if you dont get any water out those holes, but you do get exhaust smoke? Just bought a boat with 1985 force85. Been working through issues with it, but after getting it idling in a tub with enough water to cover the intakes holes, I get no water coming out the "Power Flow" ports(like those pictured).

Videos of this motor show water burbling out at idle. Is the impeller bad, or do I need muffs to force the water through the system?

The holes are a relief port, you MIGHT get water out and maybe not?
Most exhaust and water goes out the snout.
The impeller forces the water.
In a tub you need enough water to cover the cavitation plate by a couple of inches.
Just covering the holes isin't enough.
The muffs will supply enough water to the impeller,IF there is sufficent flow from the hose.
You should start your own thread.
