Should I add a fuel filter?

Hi,

I have a J100TRLCSC. I was surprised there wasn't much in the way of filtering for the fuel. It seems the pump as a screen in it but that's the only filtration. Should I add an inline paper filter to the hose after the primer bulb? Or maybe a water separator?

The screen on the pump is all you need.------Thousand and thousands of motors ran that way with no issues in 1960's ,1970's.

Depends on if your tank is permanent or portable.
Every manufacturer these days recommends the use of at least a 10 micron coalescing (water separator) fuel filter on the incoming supply from a permanently mounted tank.

The inline "rock and stick catching" filters are 30 micron at best.

Water separating filters must be on the suction side of any pump (primer bulb) . Otherwise, you risk pushing the already captured water through the the filter back into your fuel system.

I would install the Racor filter pictured, or one similar. You can see water in the fuel at a glance, as caught by the filter.
