Loking to put a new motor on my old pontune which is a 1981 27ft with a party top. Currently has an 81 90hp Evinrude which is a serious gas hog. Local dealer has a 2000 115hp Evinrude never been used with a full warranty. He has offered to sell it with new control box and cables including install for $5,250 with my trade-in.

Anyone have any comments? Is this an OK deal?
ARE THESE RELIABLE ENGINES?

Hmmm. 2000, Huh?

OMC made it. They made some bad stuff in those last years.

If Bombardier had made it, I would say no worries.

Good luck. :)

Like JB sez, OMC had some serious qc problems ,back in them days, but I don't think that's saying everything they built was bad. With that price and warranty, I'd be sorely tempted.

c/6

Hooty

I say no way I just paid 5375 for a brand new Merc 90hp 2002. It was a little more with contols and some other stuff + trade in. Id say for a couple extra bucks buy new.

M3,

I hope you are not thinking that the 115 is going to use noticeably less fuel than the 90.

It sounds pretty good to me. That is a Ficht isn't it? You are getting a 2Yr? warranty from Bombardier aren't you? I thought the 115's were fairly problem free. I would imagine, that a new Ficht, would use less fuel, than a 20yr old, carbureated engine. ;)

I'd be careful. I've had nothing but problems with my 115 SPL. Battery overcharging, burned tachs (2), mystery overheating problem twice. Mechanic at dealer (who incidentally dropped the OMC line and picked up Yamaha) says that pre-Bombadier OMC outboards are of extremely poor quality electrically. (I've also had to replace the power pack on my 9.9 hp kicker motor of the same make and year.(1998 Evinrude) Maybe the 2000 models are ok, but I'll never buy another OMC outboard.--Good luck!!

The 150hp and the175hp seem to be the real problem children this has given the whole family a bad rap well deserved in many cases but the 60 deg. 4cylinder seems to be verry reliable the fitch motor needs to kept away from any mechanic that is not WELL TRAINED on fitch. More than 50% of the fitch problems i have worked on the last 5 years or so have either been caused or made worse by a under trained factory certified tech.I hope the rumors i have heard that bomb. is planing on releasing a foctory certification cd rom that you do from home or the shop without going to school are comletly false with what i have already seen gets done with a little training we johnyrude dealers dont need any more of this the merc dealers have had enough fun already with this ? good luck !Frank

I'd pass.

Your 90 hp is probably worth at lest $700. And controls and cables will run about $250 max.

That means your getting the outdated two-year-old Evenrude for about $5700. $5250 - $250 + $700 = $5700.

This spring, my Yamaha dealer was selling 2001 4-stroke F100's for $6500 plus an additional $500 rebate. That's $6000 for a 4-stroke.

Take off another $500 and have him throw in a prop and some oil. Then do it.

What's wrong with the '81 90hp?
