Re: should I buy Force?

I have a 20' Bayliner trophy 2000 fishing boat. Both the boat and the 150hp Force engine are 1992. I am the second owner of this boat/motor. The original owner kept the motor meticulously clean and maintained. I'm am trying to do the same. No troubles so far after just finishing my 3rd season with it.

Re: should I buy Force?

Merc made two specific errors that most compromised the engine. They tried to go to a universal stator but there was a defect in the product. It was problem that affected both force and mercury. The second error was that they replaced the metal reed valves with composite ones. Force engines cold sneeze when starting and it cracks the reeds. When the reeds crack then the engine runs lean. Blown powerheads due to cracked reeds is very common in mercury Force.

Most of their other changes were corner cutting and production streamlining. Very rarely did they make any changes to Force with the goal of improving the quality or durability. For example, they did away with the separate pivot bolt and used the steering tube as pivot. They did away with the two stage/three ram trim system and used a single stage/single ram.

If I had to pick my favorite it would be '89-'91 with black CDI, 2 piece driveshaft, and 2w prestolite trim/tilt.

This is good to know RR. This is exactly the two 90hp models I have right now although one of them is in the process of having it's lower end replaced. That also happens to be the one what I believe is the black CDI you mentioned and the prestolite trim/tilt.
The other one is running great. I've been out 28 times this year without incident which is a good re-introduction to boating for us.

92 120 horse force...

just bought a maxum with this motor...the owner thought it was fried...so, i was gonna junk it....but for fun, i put on new head gasket and water pump....took a compression test...125 in all cylinders....

and have run it now about 10 hours (491 total on the hourmeter)

what a great motor!!!...needs a tell tale and tilt switch at motor....but man does it run....starts every time....and at 5500RPM pushes the Maxum 42MPH...

unless you wanna spend $10K for an optimax or e-tec...and don't mind mixing the oil the old fashoned way....these motors do the job!!

here's a pic of it RUNNING...taken a week ago...

Happy Boating!!
