So i am looking for a 50hp johnson or evinrude for my 1977 14' starcraft holiday restoration.

I found this guy selling a boat, trailer, and this outboard for $1,000 asking price. He said he would do $800 bottom line for all.

I would keep the trailer, cut the boat up, and keep the outboard and controls of course.

First. What am i getting into what the owner claims to be a 1984 unit? Are they well known for problems etc?

He said he is a mechanic and replaced all the plugs, carb, and linkages .. the carb was newer but used off his buddies old 50. The linkages were new.

The pee hole had NO water pressure .. not even a trickle .. until he held the muffs on tightly so the water leaking past the muffs stopped. Then the pee hole shot out water very well after a couple seconds of him holding the muffs.

Also there didnt seem to be much of any water coming out of the center of the prop. Just in the areas highlighted by the yellow arrows in the below ppicture. Is that typical ? I thought all water from the engine made it's way out of the center of the prop like the exhaust ?
It sounded great. Started right up. Engine seemed fairly cold to the touch. The controls are OMC. Would that be correct for a 1984 Johnson ?

The tilt is manual which sucks. What can i do about that ? Should i bother to do anything ?
I'm lookin for any help guys . i'm clueless on outboards.

HELP.

The motor is a 1987 model according to the model number. The reat all depends on how well it was maintained. Have you done a compression check? If not at least do that. Check the condition of the wiring and check the lower unit for water is some of the things that should be done.

Sorry about the pictures and the wrong size. I see them perfectly so i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong for anyone else. But i went on photobucket and resized them to medium. That should have fixed it. Dang pictures.

Thanks for all your time guys. What do you all think of the price and everything else ?

Thanks

I would do a compression check...and also if there is a lake near by do a sea run to test it....it looks in nice shape....the controller is the right one for the engine also....also see if he will drain a little lower end oil to see if any water is present....

I myself have been looking for a 50hp and most I have looked at have been in the 80's and early 90's and they have been priced from 1100 to 1600 in good shape...Also I am not to far from you in Ma.

so thats a good price....if it runs good...most you will have to do is a water pump to feel secure...

I think it's a steal. That's a nice looking motor. The trailer looks nice as well, and even the boat isn't too bad just looking.
