1989 Merc 3.0 with merc Alpha 1 drive. Looks like I have everything ready to go, but will it make it easier to work on if I pull the drive 1st. I am replacing rear main seal and pan gasket on motor

Thanks

Yes.
While you can pull the engine without removing the drive, you do take the chance of damaging the COUPLER if you lift the engine too high.
Besides, you have to pull the drive to put it back in or you will never get all the parts in correctly or be able to align it with the alignment bar without removing the drive.

you do take the chance of damaging the impeller if you lift the engine too high.

Don - I'm curious what you mean by that statement? Which impeller are you talking about?

Coupler, not impeller.
I did edit my original post.
