i have an 05 60 merc 2 stoke carb . its a great motor no issues ever . i bought it new and run it hard . but i need more power i want to max out my boat with a 75 etec . brand new i like the light weight and smaller overall size . i am worried about all the issues i read about with these motors . like burnt up powerheads , bad computers , bad injectors , back and forth to the shop . they do have a good warranty but i dont want to have to use it .

Re: should i repower with ETEC

where are you reading about all the etec issues ?most of the threads i see are positive and quite frankly gushing about them.now the pre bombadier motors were another animal alltogether.in todays world of high tec 2 and 4 strokes there is a greater chance of issues arising as to the complexity of said motors.that being said computers ,injectors etc have come a long way and are progressing all the time.i love my 60 hp etec and dont regret for 1 second buying it .fuel economy is stellar ,oil usage miminal ,its very quite and starts instantly.i also got a 6 year warrenty at the time of sale so thats 6 years of piece of mind.smoke ,zero zip zilch nada!built like a tank also and very torquey.well thats my not so biased opion, lol.

You're probably reading all the issues about the old Ficht DI mtrs. And yes, they Sucked. I've heard nothing but good about the E-TECS. A friend of mine has one and he has had nothing but good luck with it and the warranty is super.

Re: should i repower with ETEC

welI I have had a 75 ETEC since 2005. The ONLY issue I have had was occasionnal NO OIL code 38 alarms but they go away after a few minutes.

during that time the egine goes into SAFE mode and will not exceed 1200 ( darn I am forgetting the exact RPM). When the safe mode clears... I am off to the races with an engine built for the 90hp ETEC body so I doubt anything will ever break... on a 75 ETEC

Even read the 75 hp ETEC actually puts out about 83 hp

I use xd100 oil all the time ...no cheap but it sips oil and oil to me is not an issue

The engine has been amazing and burns 50% of what my Classic 50 did before It trolls at .6liter/ hour about 1US gal every 6.5 hours

I run a 17.5 bass boat 800 lbs , 2 big guys, 10 gal. gaz plus engine weight and get about 35 mph at 5200 rpm (engine max.)

My one and onlty beef and 25% my fault for not barking louder at my silly dealer (who had the boat back 3-4 times.) are code 38 alarms "no oil" since brand new (5 minutes in the water did it )

going on 8 years now.. warranty is over and I hear/read these code 38 were chronic on earlier models and could be fixed. Do I want to pay to get it fixed now ... NO . In my book BRP knows this and should recall all faulty engines regardless of age IMHO

The engine oil sensor misses a few oil pump beats and declares SAFE mode.... I just wait till it comes to it's senses then I fish all day.
In hotter temps code 38s are less prevalent if not completley gone during the summer but one cool morning will bring them back.

Would I buy another YES anytime but I wouldn't pi..... around with the dealer. I would scream my head off and his.

Re: should i repower with ETEC

I know if I had the money I'd snatch up an etec in a heart beat. Powerful, lightweight, great on gas, no break-in period, no service for 3 yr./300 hrs., proven technology on motors ranging from 15hp-200hp+, and they look cool in factory white. Made in the USA too.

touche! Just like Wolverine. (I thought the "B" in BRP sounded a little French-Canadian-ish.)

not the case for square drive screws... his name was Robertson :)

If you go back in time the Rotax engine was orginally made in Germany and was bought out by BRP.

To be more on topic, a buddy of mine runs a water taxi service around Boca Grande, Lil Gasparilla, & Palm Island(s). Gotta 150 ETEC with 18 gazillion hours, sittin on a Wellcraft V20 hull. Which he runs, well, like a taxi?

If'n yer looking for someone to diss Etecs? Emmet is not your guy ...

What exactly is it about the ETEC/Rotax version of a 2-stroke that makes them so efficient? Just overall precision?

made in USA... invented by Canadians :) :)

not really. the ficht fuel injection was invented by provenion, a german engineering company . etec is an improved ficht with the same technology ( electro magnetic high pressure injectors )

Provenion - FFI Geschichte

What exactly is it about the ETEC/Rotax version of a 2-stroke that makes them so efficient? Just overall precision?

one secret is the lean burn technology at low rpm,s .

cheers

Re: should i repower with ETEC

I repowered my boat last year. I wanted an e-tec in the worst way. But, the price was just way out of line. I was looking at engines in the 60 HP range.

The local Rude dealer, which you absolutely have to have a dealer install, wanted nearly twice the price of a new Mercury 60 EFI Four Stroke-Big Foot.

If you can get a dealer to work with you on an etec, buy it. They are great engines.

I have found that they are definetely noisier than my Four Stroke.

I love my Merc., now, even though I'm a tried and true ex John/Rude guy. I have four other John/Rudes.

I was able to install the Merc. myself with no warranty issues. The price and self installation were the sellers for me.

Crosby, Aerobat is correct. The Ficht technology was invented in Germany and bought up by OMC.
