Is it possible you've been having issues because you never went through it from the get go,
theres a tendency to assume boats are like used cars,
we just want to turn the key and go.

My buddy bought a big twin v8 and just wants to go boating, its too much boat (maintainance) for him, consequently he's always having problems.
I can see his problems coming but he lets it go then gets whacked with big repair bills.

Very good point and this is something I have ben thinking about. I would love to find out why my drive broke. Maybe I was really low or out of drive oil? Not sure but you make a great point!

Anyone know of a checklist somewhere for routine maintenance and checks to be performed on these 3.7 and alpha ones? Really all I have been doing all summer is checking the engine oil and coolant level prior to each trip.

Your first post describes the joys of a 20 year old boat. I htink you'd be happier with a newer rig, which will still have problems, but hopefully not the list you have, and not in a series that keeps you in perpetual repair mode.

Is it possible to do a complete re-power with new electrical and have boat that will be trouble free?

Initial inspection good and it looks like I will be buying the 2003 270 Rinker Fiesta Vee with a single 350 Merc and Bravo3 with dual counter rotating props. :)

... and a lot more money! Good trade off for what I am looking for and can maintain with the least amount of odgeda and reflux.

Will do. I just hope I can arrange everything so I can get a few weeks with her this season! Would kinda suck getting a new boat only to let her sit 9 months before being able to use her!!!!!

...... but the great deal is the trade off..... :D

NoGin,

Congrats on your new boat!!!

Did you fix the old boat? I have been using Stern Drive Inc (SEI), replacement drives for a couple of years now. (1987 Regal, with Twins)

The starboard outdrive has been a SEI drive for 3 years, and the port side was replaced this spring.

I have had no problems at all with the drives. I am sure you would find it much easier to sell the old boat with working drives, and would probably recoup the cost of the drive in the increased in resale value.

Not many people want to buy a boat that is not running. As for the impellor, I replace mine at the beginning of every seasons, just so I do not have to find someone to pull it, in the middle of the season if there is a problem, I consider it cheap insurace.

Good luck with the new boat.

Congratulations! Hope all goes well with the maiden voyage!!! Any decisions on the old boat yet.

If you just want to give it away for free the way it is.....

Re: Should I Sell & Upgrade to a 2003 Model???

I put another used drive on the Thompson that is in great shape. Brand new impeller, housing and the whole shebang! She is running great now for the new owner to be to take her over. I am keeping her at my mooring in Mt. Sinai for another week or 2 before I yank her for the winter. I have a nice big portable garage she will hibernate in until someone buys her. I have a slip in a private marina on the Peconic in Riverhead. Not the nicest area in the world but it is quiet and filled with good people and tons of fun stuff to keep my boys occupied like swings, chicken and duck coupes and endless fields. I am excited to boat in the Peconic and hit all some of the nice spots like 3 mile harbor and Greenport before the season ends!!!
