Should me temp sensor have power?

On an Evinrude 115HP, should the brown wire that goes from both tempature sensors to the big red plug have power when I turn the switch? I just rebuilt the motor, and worry that it is over heating, (which could be the reason the old owner ruined his pistons) I take a test light to that wire, and nothing. Please help! Thanks!

To test the sensors you turn the ignition switch on and ground the brown wire. That completes the circuit and the horn should sound. So I would start by checking and cleaning all connections. On some if not all engines the brown wire has one or more connections that are covered by a black rubber sleve and can get the "green crud" inside. Be sure to check those.

The horn is inside the shift controls.
Do as SoLittle said. Turn on key and ground the brown wire, you should hear the horn sounding it the shift controls. The horn has power when the key is on, and the brown wire provides the ground to make it sound when the sensor detects an overheating problem.

Will try that, there was a horn sitting in the boat's under dash shelf, not connected, maybe 5 inches by 3 inches. I suppose that is some other horn. Thanks all!!!

Re: Should me temp sensor have power?

One other question. Now, when I turn the key, the motor does not turn over, there is nothing going on at the motor, no turning of the starter, or that big gear plate on top, nothing, no movement/noise whatsoever. There is power at the fuse box. Is there a fuse in the throttle controls? If so, I could not find it. There is a fuse in that black box, but it is fine as well

COuld I have blown a fuse looking at that brown wire? I checked all known fuses, and they are all fine. Please let me know, thanks!

I'm unsure of this black box you have mentioned.

Inside the control box, there should be a horn/buzzer that is black plasic, round, a bit larger diameter than a poker chip and is mounted to the control box internal chassis by a couple of screws just forward of the key/switch assembly ).

The 'other' horn you have mentioned sounds very large, are you sure its a horn?

There is a little fuse that is in the engine compartment. If you locate that red plug, almost straight up from that; near the terminal block (If that fuse is blown, your motor will not crank-over)
