I got mt 56 evinrude fleetwin 7.5hp running good now. I guess I just dont know if its running at full speed or not...it revs alot higher rpms in neutral than it does in forward gear. My question is should you be able to run those higher rpms in gear?

If you can't get WOT, then you should check your coils and make sure you're firing on both cylinders:cool:

A motor will "rev up" on only a single cylinder and it is misleading.

How is your compression?

Has it been de-carb'd ??

Have the points been changed? The plugs? an overall tune up?

Is it properly propped with the right prop or over the past 54 years could the prop have been changed to "one that fit" ?

You can hook up a Tiny Tach to help verify things.

STOP revving it up in neutral!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If it were running correctly, you would scatter the internal parts all over the landscape. Maybe some of them even sticking in your belly. What do you think that thing is, a chainsaw?

FR , you hit the nail on the head. Couldn't have said it better myself. But then again maybe it's a leaf blower. Ha-Ha.

Newer motors have a neutral lockout to prevent you from over revving it in gear, they will rev higher without a load but not a good idea, now you know for future.
