Should Voltage increase

I have a 97 225 Yamaha OB. Should I see a votage increase on my Yamaha speedometer when I open the trottle when on the Battery mode ? I am sure I had always seen an increase in voltage in the past. Any ideas as what to check first. I think it may be the Rectifier/Regulator . Any ideas ??? Thanks Billy B North Carolina

Increase from what to what? Turn the key to RUN (not start). Battery voltage should be about 12.6 volts or possibly slightly less but somewhere between 12.4. Now start the engine and rev to about 1500 - 1700. Depending on what the condition of the battery was before startup, the voltage may not jump above 12.6 until the battery has been charging for a period of tiime (highly variable). Under way and higher throttle settings the volt meter should show in the 13.6 - 14.5 range give or take a bit. At those numbers and anything over 12.6, the battery is indeed charging. Less than 12.6 and losing ground means it is not.
