If so there is no water comeing from these holes. I put muffs on, i've put it in a bucket of water and I don't seem to get any water out of these holes. Am I doing something wrong? 89 johnson 25 hp. I've put weed trimmer string up threw the little tiny holes at bottom of leg, nothing. Repair place swears in feb when they checked it, waterflow was fine. I've blown water back into holes, nothing. Repair shop want 300+, they tell me the the power head must be removed to disconnect shift linkage because there is no side plate. The funny thing is I purchased a Merc 197? 20hp, and I i'm not getting water from the same holes on the back side? Previous owner told me it worked fine. Am I just a sucker and buy motors in need of expensive water pumps, or hopefully i'm not doing something wright, wite, rite right.

Just my opinion:
Don't run it in a bucket. run it in something that can get the water level about 3 inches below the holes you're showing. On that motor, you won't get much or any water out those exhaust holes anyway unless you're running wide open. Your water pump indicator should be shooting water out good, though. If it is, you're fine.

As I recall on the thru hub exhaust engines that those 2 holes are for relief pressure only and for when in reverse. Because when the engine is in reverse the thru hub exhaust gets back pressure and thus must then use those holes for the exhaust.

Does the engine run hot when testing it? Does the pee hole work, if both are ok, I'm pretty sure you're ok.

Water will only come out of those holes when the thermostat opens. It may take a minute for water to come out from those holes. But like others have said if you can dont run it in a trash can or a bucket because the exhaust makes air bubbles and then the water impeller wont pump.

BTW,
Why would a person buy more than 1 outboard that's similar in hp? According to my wife, you can only use one at a time... It's pointless. You're a very strange person.;)

one for each day of the week! It sounds like similar testing procedures resulted in a similar problem. use a full barrel or test on the river/lake.

And who needs a merc anyway... bleck!

Most marinas dont care. They just take your $$$$. If you can do it your self, then it gets done right. This is the place to ask for help. And get it done right.
