Shredding belts

I'm having a problem with my belts being shredded at high rpm. The pulleys have some pitting in them from rust and I assume this is my problem. My question is, can I get away with sandblasting the pulleys or should they be replaced? Any other ideas? Trying to do this cheap, but will bite the bullet if needed. Thanks.

Re: Shredding belts

Getting the rust off usually helps.Sandblasting and fresh paint can't hurt.
I took mine off and used the wire brush on my bench grinder..belts run fine now.

Re: Shredding belts

I usually stick rusty pulleys on big bolt clamped in a vise. Then use a 4" angle grinder with a 120grit disc on it and let the pulley spin while sanding it. This gets rid of the rust pits and makes it smooth again and even. I also use a leather glove and keep the pulley spinning at a lot slower speed.
Then when painted and allowing the paint to dry for a couple of days, the pulleys act just like new ones.
