Hi I am new on this forum , I have read some of the info given here and thought you people might help.I am about to strip down this motor and rebuild it, i have extensive two stroke racing experience but NO outboard experience. Is this a mammoth task or is it doable? The motor does not turn and has been standing fdor about a year since it broke, and the owner a Ladyfriend of mine says that if I fix the motor I can use the boat anytime I like so you can understand why I took this task on.Are there any specialised tools I might need to strip the motor offf the gearbox? Are there any inspections I can do before to assertain what caused the problem in the first place? Any help would be greatly appresiated.

Re: Siezed Johnson GT 150

Welcome!!

I might suggest removing the gearcase first. It has to come off anyway for the new water pump. Just on the rare outside chance that is whats locked up. Not likely but I've seen that a couple of times.

You should be able to get it apart with simple hand tools and maybe a torch. Once you get into it we can help you figure out what caused the problem.

Good luck!

Mechanically basic and straightforward Peter. You should have no problems with your background.

For me, the electrics are the nightmare, so I make copious drawings and jam them all in the manual. I find my own notes are as much help as anything when reassembling.

Do get a service manual... Preferably a OEM manual. They are more precise for the big projects. Step by step directions... like baking a cake!

Also, make certain to state your model number, it tells us all exactly what engine you are working on.

Stillfishing and Reeldutch make good points about the notes and pics. When I tear down a motor like that I take the entire engine harness and electrical system, except for the starter, coils and flywheel, off all together. Saves time on assembly.
